Pte. Alfred George "Jon" Shwalbe 10th Btn. Royal Berkshire Regiment (d.10th Dec 1946)

I found Alfred Shwalbe's grave in the British War Cemetery at Vevey Switzerland. Being from Berkshire myself I thought I'd do a little research to find out what more was known. The information I provide is from CWGC site. Since 10th Battalion was disbanded after Anzio I have to assume he was taken prisoner in Italy (or North Africa) and was still held captive in Germany or occupied territories eventually dieing of wounds or illness in December 1946. He may have been transferred from German PoW camp to care of Red Cross some time previously.

L/Sgt. Horace Daniel Morten 10th Btn. Royal Berkshire Regiment

My Father, Horace Morten, enlisted in The Royal Berkshire Regiment on the 16th May 1940 aged 25, he trained at Reading and Calford before being posted to the Middle East Force and British North Africa Force.

He was captured in action in Italy in February 1944 and became a prisoner of war held at Stalag Luft IV in Germany for 14 months. During his time in captivity caught TB of the spine.

He was released and arrived in the UK in May 1945, following which he spent some time in hospital recovering from a major operation. He made a complete recovery and had a full and healthy life after the war, he died in 1991 aged 76.

Pte. Michael Loughlin 10th Btn. Royal Berkshire Regiment (d.1st March 1944)

An early grave marker at Campo Verano Cemetary in Rome.

My Uncle Mick Loughlin enlisted in the Green Howards on 20th of May 1943 and was seconded to the 10th Btn Royal Berkshire Regiment. He was wounded at Anzio and died on 1st of March 1944 and is buried at Campo Verano Cemetery in Rome. He was 19 years old.

Mick was the third son of widow Annie Loughlin, my grandma, to join the Army in WW2. The other two were the eldest John, who served with the Royal Artillery and my dad Jim, who served with the York and Lancaster Regiment.

Mike Loughlin

Pte. Abbe Trackenberg 10th Btn. Royal Berkshire Regiment

My father, Abbe Trackenberg, never mentioned the war, like many others, so we never asked. However, it would be fitting for him to be mentioned here.

Nick Tracken
