Cpl. Charles Illing 2nd Btn Monmouthshire Regiment

53rd Division Boxing Champions 1944

I have a photograph of my Granddad, Charles Illing that shows the lineup of the 2nd Battalion Monmouthshire Regiment's, 53rd Division Boxing Champions 1944. The photo has the names of the individuals and their ranks listed, with them sat arms crossed and looking very pleased with themselves and a silver cup in front of their Captain J.D.P. O'Leary. I have a number of other photos of my Granddad, showing them after they have captured a village with some men in bandages and them sat on the front of vehicles holding up a Nazi flag.

Cpl. Kitchener David Veal 3rd Btn. Monmouthshire Regiment

Kitchener Veal was called up and the date was the same as the day he was due to marry his girlfriend. He got a two week deferment from 20th Jan 1940 to early Feb. I believe he made rank of corporal. He was transferred from the South Wales Borderers to the Monmouthshire Regiment, with whom he landed in Normandy in 1944. He fought through France, Belgium, and into the Netherlands. He was severely wounded on 15th October 1944 in the Battle of Overloon and brought back to Britain. He eventually had below-knee amputation of his right leg due to his injuries.

Other information, he was a good piano player, which made him popular with the lads. Also, whilst stationed at Scapa Flow, he boxed for his company. I would love any more information of my father's exploits whilst in the army. I shall be visiting Overloon on the 75th anniversary of his wounding, 15th October 2019.

David Veal

Pte. Benjamin Evans 1st Btn. Welch Regiment

My late father Benjamin Evans joined the West Monmouthshire Regiment in 1939, aged 20. After basic training, he transferred to the 1st Battalion, Welch Regiment where he trained for desert warfare. Then he sailed from Plymouth around Africa to Egypt. In 1940, he saw action in the battles of Mersa Matruh and Bardia. In 1942, he was captured by Italian troops and was a POW in Italy until the Italians capitulated. He then became a POW of the Germans, who took him to a camp in Poland where he remained until early 1945, when the Russians were closing in from the east and the Germans marched all of the POWs to a camp at Lamsdorf in Germany. Along the way he had frostbite, which resulted in all of his toes being amputated. He was liberated from Lamsdorf by the Americans and flown back home where he spent a year in hospital, being discharged in 1946.

Richard Evans

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.

The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
