Sgt. Leslie Charles "Chunkie" Dunn MM. 5th (3rd THR) Recce Regiment Royal Armoured Corps

Leslie Dunn was awarded the Military Medal during the Breakout from the Anzio Beachead. He was Car Commander of Lead LRC of Column 1. the Wheeled Odessey (according to the Regimental History). His Car blown up by German Teller Mine on the outskirts of Rome thanks to Mark Clarke. Photos of Dad and Harry Cowie are on show in the Anzio War Museum which I visited with my wife in June this year (2018) we had Celebrity Status among our visiting party.

Dad served in 14 different countries and I am sure that he should be awarded additionally the Africa Star, Burma Star and the GSM with the Palestine Clasp. Unfortunately, when elements of the Regiment were drawn out of the line to deal with civil unrest in Palestine, the Regimental Records were burned.

Pte. Arthur Wilfred "Robbo" Robinson 5th Recce Regiment Reconnaissance Corps

My father, Arthur Robinson, was born in 1912 in Tottenham, London and called into the 3rd Tower Hamlets Rifles on 24th of July 1940. He was then attached to the newly formed 5th H Btn. Recce Regiment

His periods of service were;

  • 24/07/1940 to 14/03/1942 UK & Ireland
  • 15/03/1942 to 17/08/1942 British India
  • 18/08/1943 to 08/03/1943 Iraq
  • 09/03/1943 to 28/08/1943 Middle East
  • 29/08/1943 to 18/06/1944 North Africa

In civilian life he started work for British Rail (LNER) at Liverpool Street & King's Cross from 1927 to 1969, then the Metropolitan Water Board (Thames Water Authority) until his death in 1975 aged 62. I was only 22 when he died and so never really got to have a meaningful conversation with him about his life during his service years. Oh how I wish I could turn the clock back.

Mike Robinson

L/Cpl. Walter Simmonds 5th Reconnaissance Regiment Reconnaissance Corps

Walter Simmonds served with GHQ Liaison (Phantom) Regiment and 5th Reconnaissance Regiment

Tpr. Arthur Edward "Archie" Pearman C Sqn 15th Recce Regt.

Archie Pearman was conscripted in 1940 to The Royal West Kent's. He was also a Driver Mechanic in 15th Recce, C Squadron. After the war he may have served as a driver in Essen and also possibly in Nuremberg, I have no info as to what he was doing in either location. He also served as a driver at the No.1 District Censorship Station in Bonn from the end of the war until 1947, his discharge papers confirm this. Does anyone have any information about him?

Adrian Pearman

John Joseph Sanderson 5th Reconnaissance Corps

My grandfather John Joseph Sanderson served with 5th Reconnaissance Corps. He was evacuated from Dunkirk beaches in 1940. Later he saw action in North Africa, Italy (Cassino) then Greece at the end of the war. I have in my posession a diary of his, some Reconnaissance journals from 1945 to 1947 in mint condition and allied currency too - some I was told were for use behind enemy lines. I'd really love to learn more as he never spoke of his wartime experiences. He was such a gentle man. He did a variety of jobs after the war, becoming a bus driver in Sunderland until retirement in 1980. He died in September 1980 less than 6 months after retirement.
