No. 147 Squadron Royal Air Force    Plans for the formation of No.147 Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps were made in January 1918 as a bomber squadron for deployment to Egypt. However deployment was deferred several times and on the 31st May 1918, its formation was abandoned. Formation of 147 Squadorn was authorised on 17th October 1941 as a transport unit but this did not proceed. The Squadron was reassigned as a bomber unit for Egypt and ground personnel began arriving in February 1942, but when no aircraft were received the staff were attached to various other Squadrons to undertake maintenance. Due to continuing aircraft shortage, the squadron was eventually disbanded at Shandur on 15 February 1943. 147 Squadron was reformed at Croydon on the 5th September 1944, this time as a transport squadron within No.110 Wing. It was mainly equipped with the Douglas Dakota. It undertook passenger and freight transport to Allied forces across Europe, extended from the beginning of 1945 to the Mediterranean. Some 20 scheduled services were operated in addition to airlifting personnel and supplies on unscheduled services as and when required. If you have any unwanted photographs, documents or items from the First or Second World War, please do not destroy them. The Wartime Memories Project will give them a good home and ensure that they are used for educational purposes.
