Walter Myers Churchill DSO, DFC. 3 Squadron
My brother and I as very small boys were allowed to visit Debden in 1942. We were taken around the airfield in a Bren gun carrier, going over a ditch and hedge. Included in the visit was the radio room where we were encouraged to speak to a pilot on patrol over the North Sea. I remember the incredible noise as, standing on the Tarmac, a Hurricane or maybe a Spit was warmed up for takeoff. We sat on a windowsill of the mess when the airfield was beaten up by (enemy?) fighters. My father had fought in France, The Battle of Britain and later was sent by Park as AOC Malta in 1942 where he was recorded Missing in Action 1942. He flew with 3, 605 and 71 Squadrons. I am now 81 and some of my memories might be a little coloured!

F/O Ernest James Edwards and his pilot F/L Richard Pickering lost their lives on 22nd February 1944 in a Mosquito of 605 Squadron, out of Bradwell Bay, possibly over France. F/O Ernie was my second cousin and I am trying to find more details of his life in 605 squadron and/or his loss, for his brother. Any information would be very much appreciated.Update: They are both buried into the Cherbourg Cemetery in France.

F/O John "Jackie" Reid DFM A Flight 605 Sqdn. (d.26th June 1944)
My uncle John (Jackie) Reid, RAFVR, served at 12 AFU between 25th May 1943 and 2nd August 1943. This was where he was posted after 271 Sqdn, and from 12 AFU, he went to 60 OTU to do a conversion on Mosquitos, then from there to 605 Sqdn till 26th October. He and his Observer, Sgt Ray Phillips, were killed on 26th June 1944 while on a NFT over Margate. His aircraft, NS880, exploded and crashed in flames over the main up/down London railway line. He had been promoted to Flt Lt a couple of days before his death, but had yet to receive notice of it.It transpires that on 5th/6th June 1944, he and two other 605 Mosquitos were over the Caen area, taking out searchlights and AA guns, (obviously before the para landings) at 0011hrs on the 6th, where his aircraft dropped the first bomb on D Day. He was extremely proud of that. This was confirmed in his logbook by his Intelligence Officer.

Sgt. L. F. Ralls 605 Sqdn.
My great uncle was Sgt L.F. Ralls, a Hurricane pilot with 605 Squadron. I wonder if anyone has any photographs of the squadron or planes, or interesting anecdotes about this squadron.Mike Ralls
