Wanted: Digital copies of Group photographs, Scrapbooks, Autograph books, photo albums, newspaper clippings, letters, postcards and ephemera relating to WW2. We would like to obtain digital copies of any documents or photographs relating to WW2 you may have at home.If you have any unwanted photographs, documents or items from the First or Second World War, please do not destroy them. The Wartime Memories Project will give them a good home and ensure that they are used for educational purposes.

Lason W. "Pete" Padgett 838th AA AW
My friend Pete (Lason W. Padgett) served in WWII. When he died in 2004 I decided to keep his war memorabilia. There is a photo of his group `Devil Dogs', labelled as `838th Anti Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion'. Does someone remember him?Juan
Roy Lewis D Company 838th Anti-Aircraft Battalion
Roy Lewis, 96, passed away on in 2015, at his home in Hooksett, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 16, 1919, in Ironton, Ohio, the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Russell) Lewis.Roy served in World War II with the 7th Army, 838th Anti-Aircraft Battalion, D Company, in France, Austria and Germany. His unit provided artillery support for the Rhine River crossing and the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp. Roy returned from the war to work for Economy Forms Corporation, retiring in 1983.

Burt Smith served in France and Germany during WWII as an anti-aircraft gunner.Gary R. Smith
PFC. Bailey Frank Grimes 838th AAA AW Btn.
Bailey F. Grimes was drafted into the US Army in 1943. He served in the 838th AAA AW Battalion as part of a four-man team of forward observers. In late 1944, the convoy of ships transporting the battalion was attacked by a German submarine, and the ship carrying most of the artillery was lost. The battalion spent Christmas in London, England, with no artillery. General Patton needed infantry replacements in France. The day after Christmas, the battalion had all of its artillery. The 838th AAA AW Battalion served in France, Austria, and Germany. It supplied artillery for the Rhine River crossing and the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp. In late 1946, PFC Grimes returned to the United States. He died in 2009, in Woodstock, Georgia, and is buried in the US Veterans Cemetery near Woodstock.David Grimes

Dominick Sansone was my uncle. I remember a story about him and his brother, Larry, meeting up in France during the war and how jubilant they were to see each other.I thank them both for their service.
