Stories from 15th February 1942
Sydney Matthews. British Army, 384 General Transport Coy Royal Army Service Corps. (d.15th Feb 1942)
I am a local historian researching the names on the WW2 memorial in my village and have been told a story that I would like to check out, but I can't find anything online about it. It concerns one of the men commemorated on our village war memorial in Clavering, Essex, Sydney Matthews who served in the RASC and died 15 Feb 1942, his name is on the Alamein Memorial. The local story is that he was a PoW on a ship which was accidentally sunk by the Allies as it was not marked as a hospital ship. This would presumably be in the Mediterranean on 15 Feb 1942 but I can't find such a ship among the list of those lost.
If anyone can direct me to some sources, I would be very grateful then we can record more about Sid Matthews, if it was him involved in this incident.

His date of death is 15th Feb. We all know what happened there on that date, a massacre. He has no grave. He is on Singapore Memorial. He left a 3 year old son behind.

Capt. Robert Watson. British Army, 9th Battalion Royal Northumberland Fusiiers. (d.15th February 1942)
Captain Robert Watson of the 9th Royal Northumberland Fusiliers is buried in Kanji Cemetery in Singapore. However, we have discovered, through records kept by my wife's father, Capt Eric Cordingly, a padre with the 9th RNF, that Captain Watson was initially buried on 16th of February 1942 in the garden of a house in Singapore where he was killed on 15th of February 1942, the day of the British surrender. He was buried by Lt Addy of the 9th Battalion in the garden of 159 Mount Pleasant Road, where he was presumably killed. The 9th had positions along that road.He was re-interred in 1945 in Kanji. Padre Cordingly went out after the surrender with a medical officer and burial party to bury the British dead and recorded Capt Watson's burial place in the garden which was marked with a cross and was labelled. The padre filed a burial form which contains this information. We have the original burial form and photos of the likely burial spot taken when we went there in 2015 and would like to tell his relatives of our findings.

Tpr. Patrick Moran. British Army, 18th Btn. Reconnaissance Corps. (d.15th Feb 1942)
Patrick Moran was the son of John and Mary J Moran of Clonmoyle, Mullingar, County Westmeath, Republic of Ireland. He served with 5th Loyal Regiment and 18th Recce Regiment. On board Empress of Asia when it was sunk, he was rescued from the sea, taken to a field hospital at Selarang Barracks. Possibly suffering from pneumonia, he was transferred to Alexandra Hospital on 11th of February 1942. He died on 15th Feb possibly at hands of Japanese.
Remembered with honour Singapore Memorial.
John Moran
Pte. John Walker. British Army, 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders. (d.15th Feb 1945)
Private John Walker, 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders was killed in action during the battle for Singapore. He was the son of Joseph and Catherine Walker who lived in East Finchley in Middlesex. John Walker was married to Susan and he was my great uncle. John's body was never found after the battle. During my childhood in the 1970's, my Great Aunts Annie and Betty used to think that one day, John would return home. During the 1970's there were the occasional stories of Japanese soldiers emerging from the jungle, not realising that the war was over. This always gave my Great Aunts hope. Alas, it wasn't to be. John's name appears on the memorial wall alongside his brothers in arms who were also lost during the fall of Singapore in 1945. Rest in Peace, John. He was 27 years old when he died.
