- SS Fort Mumford lost Off the west coast of India the 7132 ton cargo ship Fort Mumford (MOWT, Sir W. Reardon Smith, Managers) on a voyage from Colombo to the Middle East was sunk by the Japanese submarine I-27 with the loss of fifty crew, there was only one survivor.

Wanted: Digital copies of Group photographs, Scrapbooks, Autograph books, photo albums, newspaper clippings, letters, postcards and ephemera relating to WW2. We would like to obtain digital copies of any documents or photographs relating to WW2 you may have at home.If you have any unwanted photographs, documents or items from the First or Second World War, please do not destroy them. The Wartime Memories Project will give them a good home and ensure that they are used for educational purposes.

Ord.Sea. Raymond Lugg. Merchant Navy, SS Fort Mumford. (d.20th March 1943)
Raymond Lugg who died aged 16 was born in Jarrow in 1927, the son of Olive Pratt (nee Lugg) and stepson of William Pratt of Jarrow.Raymond is remembered on the Tower Hill Memorial and is commemorated on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance of Jarrow Town Hall.

Sgt. Richard William Brodie. Royal Air Force, 70 Squadron. (d.20th Mar 1943)
Sergeant Richard Brodie served with 70 Squadron Royal Air Force in WW2. He died on the 20th of March 1943 aged 24 years and is remembered on the Alamein Memorial in Egypt. Son of Alex S. and Williamina C. Brodie, of Portlethen, Aberdeenshire.I have a photo from my Uncle Kenneth Rodwell Lucas, who died with 37 Squadron in July 1943, of Dick Brodie. The only Brodie I can identify is Sgt Brodie of 70 Squadron, listed among the names below.

Richard Cooper died when his ship, the SS Fort Mumford, was sunk by a Japanese submarine off the west coast of India. All hands but one were lost.Karen Parsons
LAC. John Gordon Stoneham. Royal Air Force , . (d.20th Mar 1943)
John Stoneham trained as a pilot at RAF Cranwell from Feb 1943 until approx June 1943 on Course 45 at the Royal Air Force College Flight Training School. He was a Leading Aircraftman I believe he was killed in an aircraft accident after completing his training when converted on to Beaufighters. I think he hit the cable of a barrage balloon over Bristol.Alan Luff

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Secomd World War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
