Stories from 21st April 1941
Pte. James George Knowles. British Army, DEMS Royal Artillery. (d.20th April 1941)
James Knowles was loaned to the Navy's DEMS (merchant ship) programme, and was killed while a DEMS gunner on 20th of April 1941. He is listed on the Naval Memorial on Plymouth Hoe. Can anyone add to that meagre detail? They usually went in two-man teams as AA gunners, between February 1940 and September 1941, when any remaining in DEMS were transferred to the RA's Maritime Regts. He may have been lost in the Empire Endurance.CDR Fraser
Rflmn. Bernard Richard "Brudge" Pettit. British Army , 9th Battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps . (d.21st April 1941)
I found Bernard Pettit named on a grave stone that belonged to his mum and dad and wanted to find out what happened to him. Bernard was born c1918, his parents were Bernard Joseph and Helen Rosetta Pettit of Battersea, London. He died aged 23yrs, in Greece. The British Army tried to halt the Germans invading Greece, unfortunately they were unsuccessful in stopping them. Apparently they were poorly equipped. Having eventually being evacuated back to Egypt. Bernard belonged to 9th Battalion, Kings Royal Rifle Corps also known as The 1st Rangers.
Ord.Sea. Walter F Bixby. Royal Navy, HMS Drake. (d.21st April 1941)
Wally Bixby was the son of James Samuel and Jane Susan Bixby; husband of Kathleen Bixby (nee Dearman, remarried Naegeli), of Romford, Essex.(later Scranton Pa. USA)In memory of my dear husband Wally

Sgt. Ernest Stanley Phillips. Royal Air Force, 83 Squadron. (d.21st April 1941)
My mother was married to Ernest Phillips for only a few months before he died in a Hampden bomber raid. My mother had said they were counting planes as the unit returned and had a fear that he was in the missing one(s). She was returned his inscribed burnt out watch that was recovered from the wreckage and which we still have in the family today. They did not have children and my mother re-married in 1942 subsequently producing me and my three sisters. Throughout her life she longed for what would have been if he had not been killed, very sad.

William Miller was my uncle, killed just days before I was born. His name is listed among the war dead and he is buried in Plymouth (Weston Mill) Cemetery. His mother, my grandmother, always called him by his middle name Alfie and since I was born so soon after his death, she confused me with him and for years she addressed me as Alfie too.Rodney Symington

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items.
The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
