Our Library contains an ever growing number diary entries, personal letters and other documents, most transcribed into plain text. Wanted: Digital copies of Group photographs, Scrapbooks, Autograph books, photo albums, newspaper clippings, letters, postcards and ephemera relating to WW2. We would like to obtain digital copies of any documents or photographs relating to WW2 you may have at home. If you have any unwanted photographs, documents or items from the First or Second World War, please do not destroy them. The Wartime Memories Project will give them a good home and ensure that they are used for educational purposes. Stories from 29th April 1945 PO.Tel. George Finlay. Royal Navy, HMS Goodall. (d.29th Apr 1945) George Finlay who died aged 24 was born in Jarrow in 1920, the son of John George and Honoria Elizabeth Finlay (nee Ryan) of Jarrow. George is remembered on the Chatham Naval Memorial and is commemorated on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance of Jarrow Town Hall. Vin Mullen Add to this record. Pfc Eldon Dewhirst William. United States Army, 109 Infantry Regiment. (d.29th April 1945) My great uncle Eldon William was captured on 18th December 1945 during the Battle of the Bulge. All I know is he was captured and taken to Muhlberg Stalag 4b. On 17th April 1945 he was transferred to Paris, France where he later died on 29th April 1945. I'm hoping to somehow find someone who served with him or something more about him. Brent Add to this record. Pte Maxwell "Mexi" McArthur. British Army, 2nd Btn Gordon Highlanders. (d.29th of April 1945) Maxwell McArthur was killed in action on the 29th of April 1945 in the area of Tesperhude and the Krummel factory, after crossing the river Elbe below Lauenburg on one of the final small skirmishes leading to the final victory in a German surrender 8 days later when the war ended. He gave his all for King, Country and the honour of the Gordon Highlanders. Major John Gallacher Add to this record.

The free section of the Wartime Memories Project website is run by volunteers. We have been helping people find out more about their relatives wartime experiences since 1999 by recording and preserving recollections, documents, photographs and small items. The website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
