207732 Cpl. Frederick Thompson Wing Royal Air Force 229 Squadron from:Sheffield My father Eric Wing joined the RAFVR shortly before the outbreak of WW2 as a Sergeant Pilot but found he was unsuitable for flying duties. He Then joined 229 Squadron and trained as a wireless operator at Hortholt. He served most of his service in the Western Desert ground based operating from a wireless truck. Photographs surviving include Cairo, Maaten Bagush,Memphis,Sakkara, Wadi Natrun, Sidi Heneish, Tobruk, Gazala, Barce, Tocra, Nofilia, Buerat, Homs, Misurata and Tripoli(Castel Benito). He 'Liberated' the Military Consul's official rubber stamp from Governors Palace at Castel Benito as a souvenir and said place was thoroughly looted prior to his visit there in April 1943. He spent from Spring 1943 until demob at the Wireless School in Yatesbury.
