Lester Ledford was captured while on patrol in Italy but escaped shortly afterwards for a short while. He was recaptured by SS while eating with an Italian family at their home. He changed his name for fear of being shot if discovered he had escaped and used Retsel Drofdel (Lester Ledford spelled backwards). He was transported in railcar to Stalag 2B where he worked on a farm and in a blacksmith shop. He was moved from Stalag 2B to Stalag 7A
and marched on Death March until Liberated
