Able Seaman Leonard Wright Ryce served on board SS Carperby and died, age 24, on the 1st March 1942 when his ship was sunk by U-588.
He was born in Jarrow 1917, the son of Mrs. Sarah E. Robson (nee Ryce) of Chesham, Buckinghamshire. (Sarah E. Ryce married Shadrick A. Robson in 1925)
He is commemorated on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance of Jarrow Town Hall and on the Tower Hill Memorial.
