George William Ward, son of Samuel and Ann Mercy Ward of South Shields, County Durham, died aged 20 after the SS Anglo Saxon came under fire from the German merchant raider Widder on August 21st 1940. He is commemorated on Panel 9 of Tower Hill Memorial, and also on the WW2 Roll of Honour Plaque in the entrance to Jarrow Town Hall.
