John Taylor "Jock" Nimmo
British Army RASC
from:Glasgow Rd.St Ninians, Stirling, Scotland
I know that my dad, John Nimmo served at Dunkirk, escaping on the last ship out, and then in the Far East. He never spoke about his experiences but I know that he drove ambulances and that the ambulances were also used to carry food to the troops at the front.
I did not meet my dad until I was 4 years old, but I am sure there were many children in the same position. I remember that my mum showed me a photograph of my dad on a donkey and, when I did meet him, I wouldn't go near him because there was no donkey. It took me some time to get accustomed to him being in the house.
My dad eventually died of cancer which, having survived the horrors of Dunkirk and the Far East, seems ironic. Although I lost those 4 years, my brother and I consider ourselves lucky to have had the time that we had, as there were so many children and mothers who didn't.
I remember being at a Dinner and Dance with my parents, when my dad started talking to a member of the band who had been at Dunkirk, in the Navy. He had served on the last ship out of Dunkirk, the very ship that Dad had escaped on. Although Dad never talked about his experiences, he chatted to this man for ages.
I would love to know more about his time in the Army and his experiences.
