William Whitfield
Merchant Navy SS Empire Pibroch
My father William Whitfield was 1st radio officer on "Ocean Fame" and "Empire Pibroch" towards the end of the war and at wars end. He sailed on "Ocean Fame" from 8th March 1945, the outward convoy was ON 290 and she arrived in Hampton Roads on the 30th. From there she crossed the Atlantic in an American convoy UGS 85. She sailed back to America with convoy GUS 90 arriving in the Delaware on 2nd June 1945. From there she sailed independently back across the Atlantic to Gibraltar and Safi before returning home to Cardiff. William sailed on the Empire Pibroch from 15th November 1945 to 23rd March 1946. His previous ships were City of Florence, Brynmor, Cragpool, Empire Grebe, Domby, Danby, Liberian, and Empire Voice from November 1939.
