Pte. George Leslie Whitehead
British Army 138th Field Regiment, 359 Bty. Royal Artillery
from:Potters Bar
My father, George Whitehead served in the Royal Artillery in 359 Battery, 138 Field Regiment, as part of the 78th Division and took part in Operation Torch, so he fought in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He ended the war in Austria. He was away from England from Autumn 1942 to Spring 1946.
He wrote many letters to Mum and we have them from embarkation for Operation Torch through to January 1944. He also wrote up his account of the North Africa and Sicily campaigns, as well as impressions of places he visited, including Rome and Cairo.
