Cpl. John Walter Wood
British Army 6th Btn Royal Welsh Fusiliers
from:Olney
My father John Wood enlisted on 14th October 1940 aged 18 at Northampton and after being in several battalion stayed in the 6th Royal Welsh Fusiliers in C Company. He was posted to North West Europe on the 24th of June1944 and landed 25th of June 1944.
He was captured with others on the 25th Sept 1944 during an attack and counter attack by the Germans at Reusel with other fusiliers Holdcroft (4206239), W Owens and Whitehead after being ordered to assist the stretcher bearers as there was to many wounded. They were captured whilst evacuating a wounded soldier on a stretcher.
He spoke very little of his time in the war but was very proud to be a Welsh Fusilier.
Attached is a note to his mother written on the back of a photo from Stalag11B (POW No 1583) dated 22nd of October 1944.
I am not sure what happened to him between 25th of Septmber 1944 and 22nd of October 1944.but he did mention some long marches and little food.
He was repatriated through Stalag 9 I believe.
On his return to England, he was transferred to the R.A.S.C. but my mother told me as he was no longer a Royal Welsh Fusilier he wished to return to civilian life.
