W02 Ernie Stubley
British Army Royal Engineers
from:Misterton
Uncle Ernie, Ernest Stubley was 19 when he joined the Army. He enlisted in the Royal Engineers in 1932 at Sheffield, so he was a regular soldier pre-WW2 (and post-WW2). He had a varied army career and when war was declared, he was part of the BEF and served in France. He was at Dunkirk and he was there till the last small boat left, possibly wounded. It is believed he was a Sergeant or NCO at this time in his career. Ernie was evacuated and returned to the UK where he served as a regular soldier until 1954 when he retired with the rank of warrant officer (W02).
