228348 Chief Officer John Groat Merchant Navy SS Cape Corso (d.2nd May 1942) My grandfather, John Groat, was killed when SS Cape Corso was torpedoed on 2nd May 1942 while on Russian convoy PQ17. I have a letter dated 4th November 1942 from George Waddington of 45 Ceylon Street, Hull. George was one of the survivors who wrote to my grandmother giving a detailed account of what happened before and after the ship was hit. He stated John Groat was the last person he spoke to on the ship before it sank.
