Gunner David Raymond Hicks
Royal Navy SS Empire Moat
My father, David Hicks, was a gunner aboard the SS Empire Moat. On 20th September 1941 the ship was torpedoed and he was rescued by the Walmer Castle. When the Walmer Castle was hit, he was rescued by HMS Deptford. He had shrapnel injuries, but there was no anaesthetic. To remove the shrapnel, six men held him down. He was taken, I believe, to Liverpool to recover in hospital.
