I was in 167 Brigade, 56th London Division, in July 1943. The Royal Scots Greys joined our division in Tripoli and we trained for the invasion of Italy. We landed on 9th September at Salerno. Battipaglia fell after hard fighting to the 8th and 9th Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers and 7th Battalion of the Ox and Bucks. It was retaken and we withdrew. It was called "Black Monday", (Monday, 13th September). It was retaken again after fierce fighting and during the next three months the division had over 5,000 casualties in action.
