Group Capt Reginald Vere Massey Odbert was serving with 106 Squadron at the time of his death on 18th July 1943 in an accident on a gunnery training course. His Wellington III BK235 crashed 1 mile southeast of Appleby when it suffered a wing failure. The crew who died that day were:
