Spr. Ronald Ernest Peverett
British Army Royal Engineers
from:51 Kingswood Road, Chiswick, London, W4
I was born shortly after my father, Sapper Ronald Peverett, left in January/February 1942 for Palestine. In the letters my mother sent she referred to me as "our darling baby" so it was a long time before he knew I was a girl. It was even longer before he saw me - I was over three years old.
The only story he told was that of being awake in bed in a large tent one night when he saw an Arab boy enter and quietly approach each sleeping person and steal things. As he approached my father he pretended to be asleep then, as the boy went to steal from him, he jumped up and grabbed the boy. The boy responded by biting his hand and then running away but he dropped what he was taking from my father.
