Ronald Ion is presumed to have been a dispatch rider for the 2/7th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment and was possibly was wounded, either from a training accident or from enemy fire, while fighting in Sicily. He was wounded in 1943 before his whole unit was fully deployed and died from his wounds in a military hospital on 4th of January 1944, aged 21 years. He is buried in the Bari war cemetery in Italy.
