My Uncle Joe Hemelryk lived in Canada at the start of the War. He joined the Canadian Infantry Corps and was attached to the 1st HLI in May 1944 under the CANLOAN scheme. He served with them as a Captain in B Coy as 2iC in Normandy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He became Company Commander B Coy on 14th of December 1944.
He won the MC (awarded posthumously)for an action on 14/15th March 1945. He was killed in the Aller Bridgehead on 14th April 1945. He was not married.
