234165 David Shankland Royal Navy HMS Royal Arthur David Shankland was born in Eaglesfield on 5th of November 1924. He attended Breconbeds Primary, the same school as Dambuster Grant Rumbles, whose father was headmaster. David and Grant's brother Ian were in the same class. He also attended Lockerbie Academy, and worked at the Annadale Observer before training at HMS Royal Arthur. David was on board HMS EL Hind and was one of only six survivors when the SS Fort Stikine exloded in Bombay Docks on 14th April 1944. After leaving the Navy after the war David went into nursing, and was the first male nurse in Dumfriesshire. David died in Dumfries on in 2012, aged 87.
