John Henry Harrad joined 61 Squadron after completing his flying training in the United States. He was part of the detachment to St Eval in Cornwall conducting Maritime Patrols for Coastal Command. On 20th August 1942 his aircraft, Lancaster R5543 was shot down by JU88 fighters over the Bay of Biscay. The aircraft shot down one JU88 but was heavily damaged. The aircraft crashed in Spain killing all on board. At the end of the Second World war the bodies of the aircrew were reburied in the Commonwealth Graves at Bilbao, Spain.
