A/Sgt. William Hunter Dunlop MM
British Army 1st Btn. Gordon Highlanders
from:Newmilns, Ayrshire
(d.13th Feb 1945)
My uncle William Dunlop served with 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders, in Egypt and Libya was recommended and awarded the Military Medal, his citation reads:
"This NCO led his section (and subsequently a platoon) during the period 23 October - 5 November 1942 with outstanding ability. On one occasion, on his own initiative, he attacked and wiped out an enemy M.G. post and held the captured position with two men for a period of 24 hours before relief was forthcoming. Throughout the whole period he displayed great initative, organising patrolling in the area he occupied and infusing into the men a keen offensive spirit. His skill and determination in carrying through minor actions, combined with his exemplary bearing, was a continual example and encourament to all who served under him."
He died on 13th February 1945 in the Netherlands and is buried in Milsbeek Cemetery. How I wish I could have met him.
