P/O. Robert Clayton Tofts MiD.
Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve Coastal Command
My dad Robert Tofts was sent to Iceland early in WWII. He had been commissioned in the RAFVR as an operations controller in Coastal Command working with both RAF and Norwegian pilots.
He received a Mention in Despatches for his service. He told me the local Icelandics were very hostile and pro-German and that an invasion was expected but never came. He travelled back and forth on troop ships from Liverpool expecting to be torpedoed on every trip. He was later posted to Northern Ireland and then to Cornwall.
