Tech Sgt. Daniel J Burke
United States Army Air Force
from:Butler, PA
Daniel Burke was one of my dad's best friends. Burkie (as told to me by my dad) bailed of a B-17 and was captured by a German officer who was riding in a motorcycle sidecar. From there he was sent to Dulag Luft 12, and lost a great deal of body weight there during internment. He was repatriated, married, and lived a long life around Butler, PA. I have an early personal memory of Burkie cutting my hair with manual Army surplus clippers circa 1960, and I think my dad paid him a dime for that. I saw him occasionally over the years, and he always struck me as handy, thoughtful, and soft-spoken. Burkie had a son, Danny, and a daughter, Eileen, who graduated from Penn State University and the U of P School of Veterinary Medicine.
