S/Sgt. Gareth "Taffy" Thomas

Gareth Thomas served from 9th of September 1939 to release on 28th of January 1946. Following initial training, he served with 2BOD of the BEF in France before being evacuated via St Nazaire. He witnessed the sinking of the Lancastria from shore losing close friends about the fated troopship.
In August 1942, Gareth was to be found at Dados Moascar in Egypt. Then from September 1942 to March 1945 was chief clerk with the Ordnance Depot on the docks at Alexandria.
From here, he became A/O i.c Traffic with 4BOD, MEF before returning to the UK to become a member of staff at RAOC School, Hillsea Barracks until his release.
Joining up as a private, Gareth left the army with the commissioned rank of second lieutenant, one of the very few to go through the ranks.
