Henry Morris "Roy" Snedker
Royal Marines 40 Commando
from:London
Henry Snedker (my father) volunteered at the tender age of 17. He first tried to volunteer for the army and then the air force, but neither would accept him because of his age. When he tried the Royal Marines, he did not tell them his true age and was accepted.
His initials being HMS, he was quickly nicknamed Roy, short for Royal.
He served in Italy, Sicily, Yugoslavia and Egypt (where he met and married my mother, who was a WREN).
The only story he ever told about his war experiences was related to his habit of snoring very loudly. It seems that his "hut mates" got fed up with the noise and he awoke one morning to find himself still in his bed, but his bed had been relocated to the top of the hut !
He passed away in 2002 in California. He was cremated wearing his green beret.
