A/Flt.Lt. Henry Kirk Ewing DFC.

Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 90 Squadron

Harry Ewing was born in Pollokshields, Glasgow, in 1917. I understand he was the son of my paternal grandmother's brother, Raymond Ewing, of Helensburgh.

He enlisted in the RAF Volunteer Reserve in 1939 and received an Acting Commission in 1941. He was a tail gunner. Family papers suggest he held the position of 'Gunnery Leader' at the time of his being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. At that time he was flying with 90(B) Squadron on Short Stirling bombers. Although no citation was published, the Glasgow Herald newspaper of 11 June 1943, announced, 'Scots Airmen Honoured.' His award was given for 'Gallantry in Air Operations.' It is well-known that over 120 crew from 90(B) Sqn were similarly decorated, along with many other honours. The action in question occurred during his second operation tour. He survived the War and was last known to be living (in 1968) in Breadsall, Derby. Sadly, I never had the pleasure of meeting him.
