L/Cpl. Ernest Illingworth
Royal Marines 27th Battalion
from:Shipley
My father Ernest Illingworth enlisted on the 1st of April 1941 at Eastney Barracks and his employment during his service was as a cook. My Mother, and just recently my Uncle, told me that during the War he spent several hours in the sea after being hit by torpedo or other explosive. I have applied for his service record but I am disappointed that there is very little information as to where his Royal Marine service took him. It does appear that he did serve some time in the Far East and photos I have show him to be in Columbo, Ceylon. I think this would be from 25th of August 1944 to 8th of January 1946. I would like to hear from anyone who has information regarding the 27th Battalion and their time during the Second World War.
