Pte. Ernest Guildford
British Army 2nd Btn. South Staffordshire Regiment
from:Market Drayton, Shropshire
My father, Ernest Guildford, rarely spoke about the war and his time at Arnhem. However, when he did speak, he would mention the bravery of Major Cain. My father fought in the churchyard at Oosterbeek, and was eventually captured. When asked why he didn't manage to get away by crossing the Rhine, his answer was "I couldn't bloody swim, that's why". He spoke of being put in "jankers" on the odd occasion during his time in the Army.
I managed to get his service records sent to me after my father passed away. They made very interesting reading and I felt a great sense of pride.
