Sea. George Reed
Royal Navy HMS Southdown
from:Bishops Stortford
My father, George Reed joined the Royal Navy in 1942 where he served at HMS Royal Arthur and HMS Shrapnel and trained as a telegrapher. Following the training he served on HMS Southdown as an ordinary Telegrapher and then a telegrapher. HMS Southdown spent most of her service in the North Sea but was involved in the Normandy Landings.
In November 1943 to November 1944 my father served as a Telegrapher for the 30th Assault Unit (Royal Marines) led by the late Ian Fleming of James Bond fame. He was released to shore on 28th May 1946 where he moved back home to Bishops Stortford and became a precision engineer. He died in 2002.
