Feliks Wertans
French Legion 22nd Marching Regiment of Foreign Volunteers
from:Paris, France
(d.August 1943)
My father, Feliks Wertans, immigrated from Poland to France in 1931. He volunteered to the French Regiment de Marche de Volontaires Etrangaires (22ndRMVE) which was associated with the Foreign Legion. They fought to their last bullets on the Northern front in Mazencourt in the Somme area. Of the 2500 men in the unit only 800 survived.
He was interned at the Citadelle de Cambrai, Stalag 101 on 6th June 1940, but escaped 4 months later.
Sadly, he was deported to Auschwitz in 1943, and never returned.
