William Macartney
Auxiliary Fire Service Shorts Brothers Airport
from:Belfast, Northern Ireland
My Grandfather, William Macartney, told me of his service with Shorts Brothers Airport Belfast (now known as George Best Airport, Belfast) as an auxiliary fireman. He attended many parts of East Belfast that had been destroyed during the Belfast blitz of 1941. He remembered fighting fires as the bombs fell and of the bodies recovered and taken to Templemore Avenue Swimming Baths and placed on the floor of the empty pool as a makeshift morgue. His fire crew held the record for the fastest firecrew to assemble ready for a fire in the UK.
