Pumpman. Gerald Howell
Merchant Navy SS San Ernesto
from:South Shields
My Grandfather, Gerald Howell was on the SS San Ernesto when it was torpedoed in the Indian Ocean by a Japanese Submarine. After 8 days in an open boat they were picked up by an Australian Destroyer and taken to Sidney. Two other boats were used by the remainder of the crew one of which reached Ceylon after 27 days. The other also reached land.
He was also on the SS San Felix when it was torpedoed, the ship did not sink, it was in Ballast on route to Curaceo to load fuel. After temporary repairs in Halifax it sailed to New York for more repairs.
