Harry Ruddock, while in his 40s, served in No.6 & 7 (Merrow and the Downs) Platoons, B Company, 4th (Guildford) Battalion Surrey Home Guard, he had previously served with the RGA in the Great War. Capt. E H Shepard (who illustrated Winnie the Pooh) was second in Command in 1942 when the battalion had become established till 1945. By 1943 the 4th (Guildford) Battalion had 3200 members.
