PO. Harold Jeffrey Shenker
Royal Navy HMS Voltaire
My late father Harold Shenker was in the Merchant Navy prior to the war and volunteered for the Royal Navy at the outbreak of war. He was an assistant storekeeper and on HMS Voltaire in charge of issuing the daily rum tot. The irony of this was that he was teetotaler!. For some reason though he always got shore leave when no one else could.
His catch phrase was every year on 4th April to say "another year on borrowed time". He was one of the fortunate few not to be injured in the action with the Thor.
