Fus. Jack Edward Gardiner
British Army Royal Northumberland Fusiliers
from:Newmarket
My Dad, Jack Gardiner, never spoke too much about the War. He was called up in 1939 and served until 1945.
At the time of call up, he was the golf professional at a course near Newmarket. He was born in 1917 and was 22 when called to serve for his Country. I believe he served in North Africa, Sicily, Italy. He never really told me his full story, although he had nightmares for many years.
I never understood why he ended up in the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers who were based in Newcastle when he lived in Suffolk.
He was shot through the hand (a minor wound) and never returned to his former life as a golf pro.
I spent 7 years in the 1st Battalion, London Irish Rifles(TA) and strangely the numbers of my service number, when added together, come to the same number as my dads'
My thoughts and prayers to all who gave their lives for King and Country.
