William John "Pat" Jones
British Army 811th Excavator Coy. Royal Engineers
from:Sittingbourne, Kent
My Grandfather, William Jones, a Driver with the Royal Engineers, first enlisted in 1942 and was sent to Gibraltar and was part of the Excavator Company, then he came back to the UK for training.
He was then sent to North West Europe in July 1944 and helped his Unit rebuilding roads and bridges in Bayeaux, then made his way after many months through France, Holland and Germany.
We started our search for his Army history with a letter that he sent to my grandmother from Gibraltar and also a newspaper he brought back from there called The Gibraltar Chronicle dated 1943. We also had a letter he wrote to my grandmother which gave his Service No. 2154004 at the top and Excavator Coy, Gibraltar. My Mum who was a small child at this time thought he had been in France at some point as she remembered him bringing back little gifts.
We sent away for his Army Records which revealed a lot more and confirmed the little we already knew.
