Sgt. Robert Stockley

British Army 2nd Battalion

from:Anfield, Liverpool

My great Grandfather Bob Stockley told tales of serving in North Africa, Italy and into Austria. He first served at North Africa and the times he had there, the battle of El-Alamein to him was brutal. He was positioned behind a Matilda Mk. II tank as he moved forward to a German position as bullets whizzed past him and seen several of his friend drop into the sand marks left behind by the tracks of the tank.

Another battle he was in was Monte Casino, he was told by some officers that he had to move three officers by a jeep within the cover of smoke, he took up to the task and then jumped on the jeep with the officers and drove them until the smoke changed direction with the wind, his Jeep was spoted an the steering was busted by a bullet an the majority of officers were killed by Italian and German snipers where then he had to hide in a foxhole.

He was also at the Anzio where he and a few American tanks spotted and presume killed a Tiger Mk. 1 tank. It was smoking before where I believe a Corporal or Private tapped him on the shoulder and said "Bob, I think it's turret is moving." He then ordered his squad to get down and out of the way where the Tiger opened fire with it's machine gun, killing a few men and a shell passing through the Sherman, killing it he luckily survived due to the entrenchment equipment deflecting a bullet from hitting his neck.
