He was in the gym and the sergeant sent him up the rope to touch the ceiling. After he came down, the sergeant said, "Did you do it, Taff?" "Aye", said my Dad. "Up again Taff". The sergeant sent him up 4 times and each time the old man said "Aye". Next the sergeant points to his sleeve and asks, "What's these then Taff?" "Stripes", says Dad. "And what do they mean then?" "You're a sergeant". "So, what do you say next time, Taff?" "Yes sergeant". He sent him up again and finally Dad said, "Yes sergeant". "Right, off you go then Taff." That was his first week.
