Fireman John George Western Burgess
Auxiliary Fire Service West London
from:Kensington, London
My Father John Burgess was in the Auxiliary Fire Service based in West London. He was crippled with Polio since childhood but served in London at Ealing Fire Station watching on rooftops. As he was very short, about 5 feet tall, his black tunic touched the ground. He always managed to haul himself up the ladders to rooftops but he would say, with laughter, what he was meant to do in an evacuation no-one knew.
