Pte, Leonard Walter Thatcher
British Army Royal East Kent Regiment
from:Bexhill
My grandfather, Leonard Thatcher served in the Buffs and was Territorial Army before the war.
I know he was in the Expeditionary Force and was captured at St Valery. He then was marched to Poland and was kept a prisoner at Stalag viiib.
From what I remember my dad telling me, he worked in coal mines during his time in the camp. At the end of the war he was returned home by the Americans but reading online I have noticed that if that was the case he would have been involved in the Long March the Germans forced POWs to do at the end of the war? Like many he didn't talk much about the war to my father and never fully recovered health wise.
Any info would be great.
