Pte. William Johnson
British Army 1st Btn. Manchester Regiment
from:Manchester
(d.30th Jan 1944)
Looking through the family records, I found out that my great uncle William Johnson was a serving soldier in the 1st Btn. Manchester Regiment and was captured by the Japanese on the 15th of February at the fall of Singapore.
He was held as a prisoner of war for 2 years at Malai 1 POW camp where he died of dysentry on 30th of January 1944 aged 29.
I remember growing up and on each Remembrance Sunday as I watched Queen Elizabeth lay the wreath on the Cenotaph looking at a picture of my great uncle and remembering his sacrifice.
