Sgt. Frederick Harold "Farmer" Giles
British Army 6th Btn. Grenadier Guards
from:Pontesbury, Salop
Frederick Giles served with the Grenadier Guards in WW2. His elder brother Jack, I believe, served in the Shropshire Regiment and they met up sometime during the war (an unusual occurrence.)
He never talked much about the war but one thing he always mentioned was the Americans spoiling his Christmas in 1944 with the Ardennes offensive.
Post war, Fred became a Colour Sergeant Major and was posted to various barracks: Chelsea, Windsor and Guards Depot Caterham. While at Caterham he was promoted to D/Sgt. He then spent some time abroard in Germany (BAOR).
Promotion to Regimental Sergeant Major followed and postings to RMA Sandhurst (Victory College), School of Infantry Warminster, and finally HQ Eastern Command in Hounslow Barracks from where dad retired in 1964 to South Wales.
